901,956. Angular bending. REDMAN TOOLS & PRODUCTS Ltd., REDMAN, A. M., and YOUNG, F. C. Sept. 8, 1958 [June 7, 1957], No. 18254/57. Class 83 (4). A machine for bending tubes comprises a carrier movable over a bed, work-engaging means attached to the carrier for movement therewith and engageable with a workpiece clamped to the bed, means for moving the carrier over the bed so that as the carrier moves the work-engaging means are caused to move along the length of the workpiece, mandrel means for insertion into the workpiece to prevent collapse thereof during bending, and cam means for guiding the carrier to move in a predetermined path over the bed, the construction and arrangement being such that as the carrier moves over its path the workpiece is bent to conform to the shape of the predetermined path. A tube to be bent is held at one end to a machine bed 14 by clamps 62. A carrier 17, mounting two rolls 21, 22 which engage one on each side of the tube, is then pulled along the tube by hydraulic cylinder means 47, a cam follower 28 depending from the carrier 17 engaging a cam track 16 in a plate 15 on the machine bed so that the tube is bent to follow the shape of the cam track. A mandrel 58 on an outrigger frame on the carrier 17 supports the tube internally. The plate 15 has pivot members 41, 42, 43 at the centres of curvature of arcuate parts 32, 34, 36 of the track 16 formed with U-shaped rims 44 engaged by stubs 45 or 46, coaxial with the rolls 21, 22 and depending from the carrier 17, as the carrier 17 moves along the track 16. The carrier 17 thus swings about the pivots 41, 42, 43 to form arcuate bends in the tube, the pivots 41, 42 being automatically retracted after predetermined angular distance has been swung. To form bends in two different planes an indexing member is mounted on the carrier 17 to rotate the tube between successive bends, the clamp 62 being released.
