Abstract

577,197. Work-holders. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and SALTER, F. S. May 20,1944, No. 9775. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] A retractable work support or steady for an elongated workpiece A comprises a stationary frame 11, a carriage 12 movable along a track in the frame towards and away from the work, levers 15 pivoted to the carriage and having clamping jaws 16 for gripping the work, wedge-shaped faces 21 on the carriage and wedge-shaped inner ends 23 on the levers adapted, when the carriage and levers are in the work-engaging position, to abut against wedge-shaped faces 22, 24 respectively on the frame 11 so as to afford a rigid connection between the closed jaws and the stationary frame. Three .jaws are provided, one being fixed directly to the carriage and the other two carried by the levers 15. The two latter jaws may be locked together about the work by a hook 18 on one jaw engaging a stud 20 on the other. The carriage is fitted with wheels 13 engaging the tracks within the frame 11 which is secured to standards 10 on the machine. Application to lathes, reeling-machines, push presses and benches, stretching-machines, &c. is mentioned.
