Abstract
A flame-resistant resinous composition is prepared by adding to a water-containing solution of an alkali-condensed phenol-formaldehyde resin; a neutralizing agent which forms, with the alkali, inorganic salts having flameresistant properties; and an amino-formaldehyde condensate; sufficient neutralizing agent being added to neutralize the alkali present. Suitable phenoplasts are formed from phenol (preferred) and cresols, and the preferred alkali is NaOH, although NH4OH is also suitable. The preferred amino-formaldehyde condensate is formed from melamine. The preferred neutralizing agent is orthoboric acid; phosphoric acid is also suitable. In order to increase the flame-resistance, 2,5% or more by weight of a salt such as sodium metaborate (preferred), sodium pentaborate, borax, disodium phosphate, mono-ammonium phosphate, triethanolamine phosphate, or "Polybor" (Registered Trade Mark) may be added, preferably 5%. The proportions by weight of aminoformaldehyde condensate to phenol-formaldehyde condensate are at least one part of the former to two of the latter. The composition is used to produce laminates by treatment of sheets of, e.g. paper, fibres or asbestos with the solution, drying, and heating under pressure.
