Abstract

Linear polyethylene of molecular weight 5,000 to 50,000 is treated in melted form at temperatures between 160 DEG and 280 DEG C., with molecular oxygen or mixtures of nitrogen and oxygen, such as air, whereby polyethylene of branched structure is produced. The linear polyethylene used may be obtained by thermal degradation of a linear polyethylene of higher molecular weight, e.g. by heating linear polyethylene of molecular weight 430,000 at 350 DEG to 420 DEG C. under nitrogen. The products find application as film.
