A fluid flow control valve is provided with apparatus for operating it to a closed position after a predetermined period of opening. The apparatus as applied to a rotary valve, comprises a plate 14 secured to the valve spindle 12, which carries a bob-weight 25, the plate being provided with notches 15, 16, 17 and 18 and carrying a pivoted pawl 27. A first lever 30 pivoted at 31 and having a cam 29 carries a bobweight 37 at one end and pin 32a at the other which engages a slot of a head 33, mounted on rods 34, 35, of a timing device 36. A second lever 38 pivoted at 39 and having a bobweight 40 is provided with a first arm 41 whose end bears on the head 33 and a second arm 43 having a detent 44. When the valve and plate 14 is rotated in a counterclockwise direction, the pawl 37 acts through cam 39 to move the head 33 to the dotted line position to set the timing device. The plate 14 is rotated to the required valve position and the detent 44 engages the appropriate notch 16, 17 or 18. The shapes of the notches and detent 44 allow the detent to ride out of notches 16, 17, for example if the position corresponding to notch 18 is required. At the end of the set time, the head 33 rises to lift the detent outward of the notch and the bobweight 25 falls, thus closing the valve. The bobweights may be replaced by suitable springs.
