Abstract
899,628. Anodizing. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Oct. 7, 1958 [Oct. 7, 1957], No. 31921/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. A method of anodizing an article of aluminium, magnesium or copper comprises rapidly forming a uniform dense and electrically resistive layer of oxide thereon within an initial period not exceeding 60 seconds by immersing the article as anode in an anodizing electrolyte and applying current thereto while controlling the anodizing rate to avoid burning, and thereafter continuing anodization of the article at an average anodizing current density greater than that employed in the initial period to form the main body of the final anodized layer thereon, progressively increasing the current density more rapidly and to a higher maximum value than would be feasible in the absence of the resistive layer. The process is suitable for continuous operation with metal strip, suitable apparatus being described. The electrolyte may be aqueous sulphuric acid.
