Abstract

892,768. Anodising aluminium. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Feb. 9, 1960 [Feb. 19, 1959], No. 5805/59. Class 41. An article consisting of a substantial proportion of aluminium is placed in an electrolyte, the temperature of which is maintained at about - 8‹ C., the article being arranged in an electric circuit so as to act as anode in the electrolyte, and D.C. is passed through the circuit, the applied voltage being increased progressively during a first stage of about 3 to 4 minutes to maintain a substantially constant C.D. of about 2 amps./sq. inch, and then held substantially constant during a second stage of about 15 minutes during which the C.D. progressively falls. The article may be continuously agitated during treatment. The surfaces to be treated may first be cleaned by hot alkali and abrasives; parts not to be treated may be painted with a " stop-off " lacquer followed by a wax coating. A suitable electrolyte is 10% by volume sulphuric acid, containing some glycerine. The article may finally be sealed in a silicone oil bath at 170‹ C.
