Abstract
899,543. Centrifugal separators. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. April 29, 1959 [May 2, 1958; April 7, 1959], No. 14608/59. Class 23. [Also in Group XXVI] A centrifugal clarifier comprises a rotor 13 having a feed chamber 78 and a clarified liquid discharge chamber 93. Suspension from a vessel (not shown) passes through a stationary pipe 81 to the chamber 78 from whence it passes through grooves 76, 126 into an annular separating chamber 70 which has longitudinal grooves 121. Clarified liquid passes from the chamber 70 through grooves 96 to the chamber 93. Liquid from the chamber 93 is forced between discs 107, 108 to discharge through outlet 103 which is connected to a further vessel (not shown). A seal 48 permits an inert gas to be supplied to the interior of the rotor through duct 171. Deposited solids are removed from the chamber 70 by removing a nut 84 and a sleeve 72 from the rotor to permit rotation of a core 66 within the rotor, by filling the rotor with a liquid, by replacing the nut and plugging its central opening, by spinning the rotor about a horizontal axis, and by emptying the resultant solid-liquid mixture from the rotor. Pins 63 in the rotor engage the end of a flexible drive shaft 26 which is journalled in an oil-filled bearing 27 and which is driven by a belt 31 and motor 33. The rotor and its drive gear is enclosed in a casing 11 having a slidable cover 14 having a louvred opening 16. The rotor is surrounded by a barrier 19 strong enough to act as a guard should the rotor disintegrate. The barrier is mounted on pins 24 so that the rotor may draw in air through the opening 16 and discharge it between the pins.
