Abstract

893,306. Centrifugal strainer separators. SHARPLES CORPORATION. Nov. 29, 1960 [Dec. 1, 1959], No. 40922/60. Class 46. [Also in Group II] In a centrifual separator for separating solids from a liquid and comprising a rotor 11 having an inlet 51 for the liquid to be treated and outlets 47, 44 for the discharge of liquid and solids respectively and means for conveying solids axially of the rotor and radially inwards to the solids outlet, the final movement of the solids is effected by a plough 36 arranged transversely of and at an acute angle to the rotor and rotatable about the rotor axis at a speed differing from the rotor speed. The rotor 11 and an impeller 12 comprising a continuous helical screw 13 on a member 14 are driven at slightly different speeds by being connected through a planetary gear 18. The plough 36 is mounted by a bearing 35 on an oblique projection 34 of an extension 24 of the member 14. The rotor has, at its solidsdischarge end, a filler ring 37 having a sphericalshaped inner surface 38 contacted by a rubber 0-ring 55 on the plough 36 so that the latter is frictionally driven to rotate on the bearing 35 at substantially the same speed as the rotor. The discharge lip 56 of the ring 37 is radially nearer the axis of rotation of the rotor than the outlet ports 47. Liquid to be treated is fed through conduit 51 to a space 52 in member 14 whence it is thrown outwardly by vanes 53, the solids sedimented on the rotor wall being moved axially into the chamber 54 by the screw 13 and then moved radially inwardly and further axially by the wobble motion of the plough 36 as it moves along the surface 38 to finally discharge over the lip 56 to a channel 57 and outlets 44; the separated liquid is discharged through ports 47. The screw 13 preferably extends into the chamber 54 in overlapping relationship with the periphery of the plough. As shown, the rotor wall is imperforate but it may be perforated opposite the screw 13, the wall then acting as a screen, or it may be provided with a screen, through which, in such cases, the separated liquid escapes direct to the hopper 65, the ports 47 being omitted. The bearing 35 may be omitted, the plough being rigidly connected to the projection 34. In a modification, Figs. 5-8 (not shown), the plough is eccentrically mounted relative to the rotor axis.
