Abstract

Sizes suitable for the treatment of cotton, wool, viscose rayon, polyester, polyacrylonitrile and glass yarns comprise starch-amine reaction products having the formula <FORM:0898999/IV (a)/1> or <FORM:0898999/IV (a)/2> in which X is starch, R is an unsubstituted or substituted alkylene, including hydroxyalkylene, radical or an acyl, including aroyl, radical, each of R1 and R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic radical, R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical and Y is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom. Examples of starch derivatives are those formed by the reaction of aminoalkyl anhydrides, alkyl imines, alkylamino epoxides and alkyl aminohalides, e.g. ethylene imine, propylene imine, isatoic anhydride, b -diethylaminoethyl chloride, b -dimethylaminoisopropyl chloride, b -dimethylaminoethyl chloride, 3-diethylamino-1, 2-epoxy propane, 3-dibutylamino-1, 2-epoxy propane, 2-bromo-5-diethylaminopentane hydro bromide and N,N-(2,3-epoxypropyl) methyl aniline or salts thereof, with starch in an alkaline medium, e.g. an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide or quaternary ammonium hydroxide, and the quaternary ammonium compounds formed by reacting the starch-amine reaction products obtained with, for example, methyl iodide. The derivatives may be prepared from untreated starch or deterinized, hydrolyzed, oxidized, esterified or etherified starches still retaining amylaceous material. The starch derivative may be produced in an ungelatinized form and filtered, washed and dried to form a dry powder which is heated in water before use as a size, or the derivative may be produced in a gelatinized form and used directly for sizing or converted into the dry, cold-water soluble form by drying over heated drums and may then be dispersed in cold water and used for sizing without heating. Specification 765,880 is referred to.ALSO:Textile yarns, e.g. cotton, wool, viscose rayon, polyester, polyacrylonitrile and glass yarns, are warp-sized and rendered antiseptic by passing them through a sizing solution containing a starch-amine reaction product having the formula <FORM:0898999/IV (c)/1> in which X is starch, R is an unsubstituted or substituted alkylene, including hydroxy-alkylene, radical or an acyl, including aroyl, radical, each of R1 and R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic radical, R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical and Y is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom. Suitable starch-amine reaction products are those formed by the reaction of aminoalkyl anhydrides, alkyl imines, alkylamino epoxides and alkylamino halides, e.g. ethylene imine, propylene imine, isatoic anhydride, b -dimethylaminoethyl chloride, b -dimethylaminoisopropyl chloride, b -dimethylaminoethyl chloride, 3-diethylamino-1,2-epoxypropane, 3-dibutylamino - 1, 2 - epoxypropane, 2 - bromo - 5 - diethylaminopentane hydrobromide and N,N-2,3-epoxypropyl) methylaniline or salts thereof, with starch in an alkaline medium, the amines formed optionally being converted into quaternary ammonium compounds by reaction with, for example, methyl iodide. The sizing solution preferably contains 3-35 parts by weight of starch derivative per 100 parts of water and may contain no more than 2% based on the weight of the starch derivative of a warp size softener. Specification 765,880 is referred to.
