Abstract

Hydrogen peroxide is prepared by reacting an organic per-acid with an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohol containing 1-6 C atoms in the presence of an esterification catalyst. Per-acids may be per-acetic or per-propionic, and the corresponding carboxylic acid may be present as diluent and is also esterified. The reaction may be at below 100 DEG C. and alcohols may be methanol or ethanol. Catalysts are sulphuric, or phosphoric acids, or cationic exchange resins. An inert solvent, e.g. methylene chloride, petroleum ether, or ligroin may be added to the mixture and the H2O2 is recovered by distilling off, or solvent extracting, the ester formed.
