Abstract

A continuous process for the preparation of pure, colourless maleic anhydride by dehydration of maleic acid comprises introducing an aqueous solution of maleic acid containing 40-60% of acid continuously into the vapours of a halogenated solvent having a boiling point higher than 145 DEG C. in a distillation column, the solvent being introduced simultaneously at the top and bottom of the column, and the water/solvent binary mixture produced being eliminated in proportion as it is formed by distillation, the halogenated solvent being separated from the binary mixture and returned to the column. The halogenated solvent may be a tetrachlorethane such as 1,1,2,2-tetrachlorethane. The maleic acid solution advantageously contains a dehydration catalyst such as sulphuric acid or p-toluene-sulphonic acid.
