Abstract

897,940. Making pipes. CARTWRIGHT, W. L. March 3, 1961 [March 8, 1960], No. 8109/60. Class 99(2). In a method of manufacturing fibre reinforced resin tubing, resin impregnated fibres 1 are drawn longitudinally over a mandrel 10 and further resin impregnated fibres 13 are helically wound on top of the fibres 1, the motive force for drawing the fibres along the mandrel and through a curing oven being applied mainly through the longitudinal fibres. As shown, glass fibre rovings 1 are led through a resin bath 2, passed through a thermostatically controlled pre-heating chamber 6 and by means of guide plates 7 and 8 and a temperature controlled die 9 the rovings move longitudinally along a mandrel 10 supported on plates 7 and 8. The die 9 and the mandrel 10 may have a P.T.F.E. liner 11. The rovings are finally cured in a muffle seating chamber 12 and the tube 16 so formed is helically wrapped with resin impregnated glass rovings 13 by means of a rotating disc 13. The built up tubing is then wrapped with " Cellophane 19 " (Registered Trade Mark) until it is finally cured on passing through a muffle heating chamber 20. Successive layers of longitudinal and helical fibres may be applied and/or any combination of helical windings such as crossed helices may be used.
