Abstract

1349906 Plastics tubes BRUCE & WALKER Ltd K G WALKER and J BRUCE 29 Aug 1972 [30 June 1971] 30761/71 Heading F2P [Also in Division A1] A fishing rod comprises one or more tubes which is or are made from a composite material of resin bonded glass fibre and resin bonded carbon fibre arranged so that at least one layer of glass fibre 10 surrounds the carbon fibre 11. The or each tube is made by cutting a piece of woven glass fibre cloth 10 into a trapezoidal shape and impregnating it with a phenolic resin. Carbon fibres are laid lengthwise along the cloth and impregnated with an epoxy resin, the arrangement being such that a uniform number of turns is achieved when the assembly is wound around a tapered metal mandrel (Fig. 1, not shown). An adhesive cellulose tape is used to bind the assembly in place after which it is placed in an oven and heated to cure the resin. The adhesive tape is then stripped away and the assembly sanded to a smooth finish. The Specification 1,253,578 is referred to.
