Abstract
Vinyl chloride is polymerized or copolymerized with one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers in aqueous dispersion with the use of oil soluble activators in the presence of mixtures of water soluble colloids and partial esters of aliphatic polyalcohols with a higher fatty acid or mixed esters of aliphatic polycarboxylic acids with 2 to 12 carbon atoms in which one acid group is esterified with an aliphatic polyalcohol and the remaining acid groups are esterified with aliphatic monohydric alcohols with 1 to 20 carbon atoms as suspension agents wherein acetyl-cyclohexyl-sulphonyl peroxide, or a mixture thereof with one or more other oil-soluble activators such as azo-di-isobutyronitrile, is used as the activator. If a second activator is used it is present in an amount between 5 and 90% by weight of total activators. Polymerization is carried out in an autoclave at constant temperature until the pressure falls. In the examples, the other monomers are octyl acrylate and dioctyl maleate, while the dispersing agent is a mixture of polyvinyl alcohol and triglycerin monostearate.
