Abstract
The invention comprises phosphonic acid esters of the formula <FORM:0896956/IV (b)/1> where "alk" is alkyl, cycloalkyl or alkenyl containing up to 8 carbon atoms and which may be substituted, X is -OR, -SR or -NR1R2 and R, R1 and R2 are substituted or unsubstituted alkyl radicals containing up to 4 carbon atoms, with the proviso that when X is -OR "alk" must be alkenyl; and their preparation by reacting chloral with a compound <FORM:0896956/IV (b)/2> where R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl radical of up to 4 carbon atoms, in the presence of an inert organic solvent and at elevated temperature. Specified compounds are ("alk" and X given): ethyl, ethylthio; ethyl, diethylamino; cyclohexyl, dimethylamino; isobutenyl, 2-chloroethoxy; isooctenyl, 2-chloroethoxy; b -ethoxyvinyl, 2-chloroethoxy; and b -phenylvinyl, 2-chloroethoxy. The compounds are of use as insecticides (see Group VI).ALSO:Insecticidal compositions contain as active ingredient a compound of the formula <FORM:0896956/VI/1> where "alk" is alkyl, cycloalkyl or alkenyl containing up to 8 carbon atoms and which may be substituted, X is -OR, -SR or -NR1R2, and R, R1 and R2 are alkyl radicals containing up to 4 carbon atoms and which may be substituted, with the proviso that when X is -OR "alk" must be alkenyl (see Group IV (b)), and a solid or liquid carrier or diluent. Specified carriers are talc, chalk, bentonite, clay, water (with emulsifiers if necessary), methanol, ethanol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and liquid hydrocarbons. Known insecticides and/or fertilizers may also be present.
