[Also in Group XXIII] An epicyclic reduction gear in or for attachment to a portable drilling machine comprises coaxial input and output shafts 4, 5, Fig. 1, a sun gear 7 on shaft 4 and a planet carrier 8 on shaft 5, a planet gear 9 on the carrier meshing with gear 7 and also with an internally-toothed ring 10a, formed on or secured to a casing 10. Shaft 4 may be plain for engagement with the machine chuck or screwed to engage the machine spindle, and shaft 5 is screwed to carry a chuck 6. Casing 10 is held by the operator, in use, and can slip if the drill &c. in chuck 6 strikes an obstruction. The opposing faces of gear 7 and carrier 8 have cams 7a, 8a, which apply percussive blows to shaft 5 when shafts 4, 5 are relatively rotated. This percussive action may be rendered inoperative by a distance-piece in the bore of chuck 6 to displace shaft 4 to the left and separate the cams axially. In another arrangement, the end of shaft 4, Fig. 3, is arcuate and co-operates with a correspondinglyshaped plug 11 in the chuck bore, to apply the percussive blows.
