In an arrangement for providing a representation of the difference in number of positive and negative electrical pulses which may arrive at irregular intervals and be of either polarity, a clock pulse train is fed to a frequency dividing circuit, a pulse being added to the train when a pulse to be counted is negative and a pulse being subtracted from the train when a pulse to be counted is positive, so that the phase shift of the frequency divider output represents by its magnitude and polarity the required input pulse difference. The circuit may be applied to machine tool control.
