Abstract
The invention comprises theophyllin bases of the general formula <FORM:0896787/IV (b)/1> (wherein R1 and R2 represent alkyl or hydroxyalkyl groups) and their acid addition salts (e.g. nicotinates), and the preparation thereof by heating a 7-(g -halo-b -hydroxypropyl)-xanthine of the general formula <FORM:0896787/IV (b)/2> (wherein X represents a halogen) with a secondary amine or by reacting theophyllin with a haloalkanolamine of the general formula X-CH2-CH(OH)-CH2-NR1R2 in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate. The products are useful for treating diseases of the peripheral blood vessels. Haloalkanolamines of the last general formula above are prepared by reacting epihalohydrins with secondary amines in a hydroxylic solvent.
