Abstract
896,492. Traversing spindle mechanisms. SACO-LOWELL SHOPS. Feb. 9, 1959 [Feb. 10, 1958], No. 4458/59. Class 120(2) The traversing spindle mechanism especially of a roving frame comprises a bobbin driving member which is reciprocated by means of the alternating relative rotational speeds of two coaxial driving shafts 30, 33, the member being rotatable relative to the shaft 33. The member comprises a shaft 31, which is splined to the shaft 30 driven from a shaft 46, fixed to a nut 34, which is internally threaded for reciprocation on the shaft 33 driven from a shaft 48. The speed of the shaft 46 decreases as a belt 106 is moved on the cones 100, 105 of a variable speed drive so that the roving is wound at a constant linear speed, this speed of the shaft 48 is alternately greater and less than the speed of the shaft 46 and decreases as winding proceeds, and the length of the traverse is gradually decreased to give a package with conical ends. A flyer 10 is rotated at constant speed by the shaft 44 which is driven directly from the main driving shaft 90. The shaft 90 also drives the ring gear 94 of a planetary differential 96, the cone 100 and bottom drafting rolls 104. The speed differential of gears 94 and 108 is transmitted through a pinion 110 and shaft 112 to the shaft 46 and to the ring gear 116 of a second differential 118. To reverse the traverse a pawl 148 is biased against one of two studs on a collar 154 fixed to a builder shaft 142, which is held against rotation when one arm of a builder dog 158 is engaged by a builder pin mechanism 164. When this mechanism clears the builder dog arm, the shaft 142 is rotated one half revolution through a gapped pinion 146 and operates a pivoted reversing lever 170 connected at one end to a collar 174 splined on a shaft 169 and carrying reversing gears 130, 132. The alternating rotation of the shaft 169 so produced also reciprocates the builder jaw 164 through the rack gear 165 and is transmitted to the sun gear 122. Rotation of the shaft 142 moves the belt 106 by means of gears 178, 180, a rack 186 and the retainer 107 and shortens the distance between the jaws 196, 198 by means of a pinion 188 and oppositely handed threads 192, 194. Reduction in the spacing between the jaws 196, 198 shortens the length of the traverse of the shaft 142 so that the motion of the pinion 136 controlling the speed of the shaft 48 is derived both from the gradually decreasing speed of the pinion 108 and the direction of rotation of the shaft 169. A rack 186 is operated through gears 178, 180 as the shaft 142 rotates, whereby the belt 106 is operated through a retainer 107 and the building jaws 196, 198 are moved together by threaded portions on a shaft 184 to reduce the lengths of the traverse.
