Abstract
1388203 Rolling tubes MANNESMANN-MEER AG 24 March 1972 [31 March 1971] 14015/72 Heading B3 A feed mechanism for a cold pilger rolling mill incorporates two feed slides 14 and 15 for feeding a tube 1 between the rolls 3 of the mill, the slides being carried on right and left-hand threaded portions of a feed spindle 13. The slides alternately grip and release the tube and are shifted axially both by rotation of, and axial movement of, the spindle. The spindle is rotated through gears 19-26 and 28-30 from a shaft 4 which is driven from the reciprocating drive assembly for the stand 2 of the mill. A reversing clutch 27 determines the sense of rotation of the spindle 13 and hence the direction of movement of the slides. A pulley assembly 21 allows the speed ratio of the drive to be adjusted. Axial movement of the spindle is also effected by a lever 10 acting directly on the end of the spindle. The lever is pivoted at 16 and carries a cam follower 17 at one end which co-operates with a continuously rotating cam 9. By changing the position of the pivot 11 of the lever, the amount of axial movement of the spindle can be varied. When one slide 14 or 15 is feeding the tube, the other is returning to a feed position without gripping the tube so that it can, in turn, take over the feeding. The adjustable pivot 11 and pulley assembly 21 are used to provide a degree of deformation of the tube consistent with the tube material used.
