Abstract

A paint comprising a vehicle constituted by an oil or varnish and a water sensitive pigment is stabilized against thickening on storage by incorporation therein of a compatible readily hydrolysable ester of an organic acid, the ester being soluble in the vehicle of the paint. The vehicle may comprise a drying or a semi-drying oil in admixture with a natural or synthetic resin. The pigment may be zinc oxide, white lead, red lead, calcium plumbate, basic lead sulphate or metallic pigments, e.g. aluminium. Suitable esters may be formed from a low molecular weight aliphatic alcohol (containing up to 8 carbon atoms/molecule) or an aromatic hydroxy compound (containing up to 8 carbon atoms/molecule) and a saturated or unsaturated mono-, di- or tri-carboxylic aliphatic acid (containing up to 8 carbon atoms/molecule). The carboxylic acids may have amino, hydroxy, keto or halogen substituents. Specified suitable esters are methyl and ethyl chloroformates, triethyl citrate, dimethyl fumarate, dimethyl maleate, dimethyl malate, dimethyl malonate, diethyl, di-n-propyl, dioctyl diphenyl, dibenzyl and ditolyl oxalates, ethyl oxamate and ethyl pyruvate. Driers such as lead and cobalt naphthenates may be present in the paint. Specification 574,826 is referred to.
