Abstract

Interpolymers of styrene or alkyl or halogen nuclear-substituted styrene, with one or more unsaturated fatty acids or the partial ester or esters thereof are made by heating, e.g. below 250 DEG C. a mixture of the components, optionally dissolved in a volatile solvent, with or without superatmospheric pressure, in the presence of 1/2 to 5 per cent by weight of sulphur based on the fatty acid radicles. In a modification the fatty acid is fully esterified and the interpolymer saponified to the fatty acid or acids, or alcoholysed, e.g. in the presence of ethylene glycol, glycerol, sorbitol or pentaerythritol to yield partial esters. Styrenated oil-modified alkyd resins may be prepared by heating the interpolymers with polybasic acids, e.g. phthalic acid and polyhydric alcohols, e.g. glycerine. Specified fatty acids are those derived from linseed and castor oil; specified partial esters are mono- or di-glycerides of linseed oil; specified fully esterified fatty acids are linseed oil, china wood oil and dehydrated castor oil. The interpolymers may be converted into soaps and the alkali metal and ammonium soaps used as emulsifying agents. The styrenated oil-modified alkyd resins may be compounded with pigments, solvents, e.g. xylol, driers such as cobalt and lead naphthenates, water and stabilizing agents such as glue and casein, and used as coating or impregnating compositions or printing inks.
