[Also in Group XL(a)] A self-engaging coupling for joining two bodies which in use are subjected to a force due to fluid pressure tending to separate the bodies consists of members housed in one body which are displaced into recesses in the other body to interlock the bodies, means which, during an initial condition when the force is small displaces at least some of the members into their recesses so as to interlock the bodies, and means which when the force is restored transmit it to the other or to all the members to lock them in their recesses, the first-mentioned means being incapable of releasing the members while the force acts. Fig. 1 shows, at the left, an unlocked plug. While the force is still small springs 15 force down a ring 9 carrying wedges 8 which move outwards balls 5a into recesses in pipe 1; the force is then restored, e.g. by reducing pressure above the plug, and lifts the body 2 of the plug so that locking ring 4 moves the remaining balls and locks all the balls in place, as shown at the right pf Fig. 1. The plug is removed by removing or balancing the pressure in pipe 1 and lifting the rods 12; a lost motion coupling 16 lifts ball ring 7 to unlock the balls.
