Abstract

894,421. Vices. FREEMAN, H., and SPENDLOVE, E. H. March 10, 1961 [May 20, 1960], No. 17978/60. Class 61. A vice jaw has pistons 8 movable in cylinders 6, each cylinder being connected to a common passage 9 containing an hydraulic liquid, each of the pistons engaging the face 2 of the jaw, said face being movable and the passage 9 having means therein to apply pressure to the liquid to move the jaw face relative to the jaw. A pair of plates 3 are secured one at each end to the jaw face 2 by screws 4 and are slidably fitted at the other end 5 to the jaw casting. The pistons 8 comprise pressure pads which engage with the back surface of the jaw 2. A screw 14 threaded into the end of the passage 9 in the side of the jaw acts on a pressure pad 11 slidable in the passage 9 to apply pressure to the hydraulic liquid. The cylinders 8 are slightly downwardly inclined from the horizontal to impart a downward component to the gripping force.
