Abstract
671,349. Machine-tool details. BERTHIEZ, C. W. March 1, 1949 [March 1, 1948], No. 5585/49. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXV] A device for clamping a slidable member 2 of a machine-tool to its slideway 3 comprises a cylinder 35 provided with a cam-face 36, a piston 29 movable in the cylinder and provided with a plane face 28 and a member 25 provided with a cam face 26, balls 27 contacting all the faces, two clamping jaws 7, 19 bearing on opposite surfaces of the member 2 and its slideway, and a tie-rod 6 having one end connected to the jaw 7 and the other end passing through the piston and member 25, the other jaw engaging the member 25. The piston is moved by hydraulic means as shown, or by electrical or mechanical means. The arrangement of the cam faces may be the reverse of that shown or the piston may be provided with a cam face and the member 25 with a plane face. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), an extension of the piston contacts the upper jaw and the cam face on the cylinder is divided into two differently-inclined sections to provide a two-step clamping action. In this case, the hydraulic cylinder is provided with an inlet and an outlet, the latter enabling the clamped parts to be released.
