Abstract
Aromatic isocyanates are prepared by reacting phosgene with an aromatic primary amine in an inert organic solvent said reaction being initiated and maintained at a temperature within the range of 60 DEG C. to 90 DEG C. to produce an intermediate product containing carbamyl chloride, and reacting the intermediate product in the presence of phosgene at a predetermined higher temperature to produce the aromatic isocyanate. An excess of phosgene is preferably employed. The reaction may be carried out batchwise or continuously. In an example a solution of m-phenylene diamine in chlorobenzene heated to 75 DEG C. is gradually added together with excess phosgene to a saturated solution of phosgene in chlorobenzene heated to 80 DEG C., the mixture is maintained at 80 DEG C.-85 DEG C. until all the diamine is added and then refluxed, allowed to cool and the chlorobenzene distilled off to leave a residue of m-phenylene diisocyanate. The following compounds are similarly prepared in examples: 2 : 4-tolylene diisocyanate, m-chlorophenyl isocyanate and tris-(4-isocyano-phenyl)-methane.
