Abstract

The invention comprises a process for the continuous preparation of aromatic isocyanates by the reaction of an amine or a salt easily decomposible into a free amine, in an inert solvent, and a solution of phosgene in excess which is injected under a pressure greater than 3 kgs. per sq. cm., by introducing the reactants simultaneously with vigorous mixing into the lower end of a tubular reactor, in which the reaction products are caused to move rapidly to the upper end, and the whole of the liquid phase is collected in a container from which it passes for the isocyanate to be extracted. The latter container is kept under pressure and the excess phosgene evolved, together with the hydrochloric acid formed, passes to and through a condenser, and the phosgene is liquefied by cooling with water. The reaction mixture in the container flows to a further heated container where the pressure is reduced so that the mixture expands, and then flows out preferably as a film, the remaining excess phosgene and hydrochloric acid being released and condensed. The excess phosgene may be recycled. Examples are given of the preparation of tolylene diisocyanate fron tolylene diamine and phosgene intricresyl phosphate, and the preparation of benzene isocyanate, from aniline and phosgene in ethyl phthalate.
