Abstract
Penicillin-splitting enzyme preparations are produced by cultivating, according to conventional methods, penicillin-splitting bacteria, such as Escherichie coli ATCC 11105, under aeration in nutrient solutions which contain at most insignificant quantities of fermentable carbohydrates and to which phenyl-acetic acid or derivatives thereof are added in quantities of 0.002%-2%, based on the nutrient solution. Preferably corn steep liquor is used as the main basic nutrient medium and carbon dioxide is introduced during the period of growth. The phenyl-acetic acid derivative may be the potassium salt or may be phenyl-acetamide, phenaceturic acid or phenacetyl-glutamic acid. Examples describe the use of the preparations in deactivating penicillin G.
