Abstract

893,187. Electroluminescent devices. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. April 22, 1958 [April 22, 1957], No. 12821/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(1) An electroluminescent device, e.g. a photoconductive electroluminescent combination light amplifier or storage device, comprises two electroluminescent layers, each preferably of phosphor embedded in ceramic as in Specification 733,260, having disposed between them a layer of an opaque material of ceramic, black glass or thin metal, e.g. vaporized aluminium which can be applied as a mosaic of insulated separate dots to prevent " cross-talk." In the combination light amplifier the photo-conductive layer is capable of receiving light from one of the electroluminescent layers for feed-back purposes and is prevented by the opaque layer from receiving light from the other layer and ambient light. The invention can be used in conjunction with an arrangement in which on a layer of electroluminescent material there are a number of circular discs of light-transparent conducting material, the discs being electrically insulated from one another by an insulating opaque material, and a layer of photo-conducting material being applied over the discs and insulating material so as to leave part of the tops of the discs free of photo-conductive material or with the arrangement described in U.S.A. Specification 2,973,436 in which the discs can be of rectangular or square cross-section. Alternatively the arrangement of Specification 829,294 can be used. The layers of electroluminescent material and opaque material can be sandwiched between arrays of parallel lighttransparent conducting strips perpendicular to each other as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,996,623.
