Abstract
842,186. Electroluminescence. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Dec. 11, 1957 [Dec. 28, 1956], No. 38548/57. Class 39(1). An information displaying device of the combined photoconductive and electroluminescent type comprises a glass plate 1 with a transparent conductive coating 2 covered by an electroluminescent layer 3, a number of conductive discs 6 separated by an opaque insulating material 9, a photoconductive layer 4 having holes in register with discs 6, and a thin conductive grid 10 fixed to layer 4 by a layer of transparent conductive cement 11. The conductive discs may be either transparent or opaque and the insulator 9 may be omitted. The layer 3 preferably consists of an electroluminescent phosphor embedded in a ceramic dielectric. Grid 10 and coating 2 are used as electrodes and the device may be constructed by known methods, one of which is described using copper and lead activated zinc sulphide as the electroluminescent phosphor. The photoconductive material may be replaced by one in which conductivity is inducible by cathode rays. Specifications 731,364 and 773,997 are referred to.
