A hand grenade for practice purposes comprises a clay body 1 having an axial bore lined by a sleeve 3 in which a cork wad 6 underlies an explosive charge 5 above which is a delay fuze 8 provided with a match head 9 and surrounded by a sleeve 7 ending in a paper collar 10 covering the charge 5. Colouring matter is incorporated in the clay. The sleeve 3 is of rolled paper and surrounded at its upper end by a rolled paper collar 4 and a waterproofing layer 2 applied to the body 1 is continued over the outer surface of the collar. A cap 14 covering the top of the grenade is integral with leaf springs 16 bent to engage a groove 18 in the body 1. The cap is bolted to a tubular element extending between the sleeves 3 and 7 and ending in tongues 12. A spring 15 surrounding the element 11 bears against the collar 4 and the cap 14. Before throwing the grenade, a cotter pin 21 is removed to' allow withdrawal of a safety pin 19. As soon as the springs 16 are released, the spring 15 forces the cap 14 off the body 1 and, as the tube 11 is withdrawn, the inner surfaces of the tongues 12 rub against the match head 9 and ignite it and the resultant flash ignites the fuze 8. In turn the fuze fires the explosive 5, which reduces the body 1 to a coloured dust by which hits are indicated.
