892,685. Thermal switches. RUSSELL, W. M. April 8, 1960 [April 16, 1959], No. 13017/59. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XI] In an electric kettle a single circuit breaker element is located in a housing outside the boiling space and is designed to be actuated by two independent thermal switch arrangements. When the water in an electric kettle boils a jet of steam 51 is directed out of the heating chamber on to a bimetallic spring 45 housed in a separate chamber, causing the free-end of the spring to. push an axiallyslidable member 77 against a snap-action switch actuating member 69 pivoted about a toggle spring 66, a transverse pin 76 on the member 69 being arranged to force contact buttons 56, 57, or spring blade 55 and blade 58 respectively apart, thus cutting of the supply to the heating element. In the event of the kettle boiling dry a safety device comprising two bimetallic members 35, 36 arranged so that on heating their free ends move to the right and left respectively is provided and a tensile stress is placed on member 36 by means of an adjustable screw 78. In a normal heating operation the movement of the free end 36 is stated to be negligible but when the kettle boils dry the heating of member 35 causes it to bend to the right and bimetallic member 36 will be insufficiently heated to counteract the tensile force in it and will move to the right also, its free end abutting against part 81 of member 69, thus actuating the switch and cutting of the supply to the device. The thermal switch is reset manually.
