Abstract
Copolymers may be prepared by copolymerizing in bulk mixtures comprising 60 to 80% of acrylonitrile and 40 to 20% of dihydro-dicyclopentadienyl vinyl ether (DDV), or mixtures in which up to 70% of the DDV has been replaced by other copolymerizable monomers, e.g. methyl methacrylate, dihydro-dicyclopentadienyl methacrylate, glycol dimethacrylate and methacrylic acid. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, di-t-butyl peroxide and azodiisobutyro-nitrile, in one or more stages at different temperatures, e.g. at 50 DEG C., 100 DEG C. and then at 120 to 130 DEG C. Examples describe the copolymerization of (4) acrylonitrile and DDV, together with (1) glycol dimethacrylate, (2) methyl methacrylate, methacrylic acid and glycol dimethacrylate and (3) methacrylic acid, glycol dimethacrylate and dihydro-dicyclopentadienyl methacrylate. The products may be used for the production of orthopaedic supports, inlays and prostheses, and roofs, glazing for omnibuses and protecting spectacles.
