Abstract
Copolymers of styrene and dimethyl citraconate or dimethyl mesaconate, optionally together with acrylonitrile, may be prepared by heating a mixture of the monomer at 50 to 150 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a free-radical-forming compound for times ranging from 24 hours to several days. Preferred copolymers contain 30 to 90 parts of styrene and 70-10 parts of the diesters, and optionally up to 30% (by weight of the monomers) of acrylontirile. The catalyst may be an oganic peroxide or hydroperoxide, e.g. benzoyl or lauryl peroxide. The copolymers may be injection moulded and extruded.
