Abstract

A tobacco composition comprises tobacco and an additive forming from 0.5% to 8.0% by weight of the composition and consisting of an N-alkyl nornicotine or N-alkenyl nornicotine compound containing from 2 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl or alkenyl group, or an acid addition salt of one of these compounds, the additive diminishing the physiological responses elicited by the nicotine in the tobacco. N-alkyl, N-ethyl, N-hexyl or N-octyl nornicotine may be used, or addition salts formed by reaction with acetic, hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric, citric or malic acid. The compound is prepared by the reaction of nornicotine (2-(3-pyridyl) pyrrolidine), which occurs naturally in tobacco, with the appropriate alkyl halide or alkenyl halide. The additive may be sprayed on the tobacco.
