A loaf supported in a holder 6 by an adjustable ledge 7 is progressively sliced by a spiralshaped knife 8 rotated by an electric motor 3 and a rear lip 8A of which deposits the slices in succession on a grid 9 rotated by the motor 3 at one sixth of the knife speed so as to carry them between toasting heaters 10, 11 to where a deflector 12 ejects them via an outlet 13. There may be a variable-speed gear between the motor 3 and the members 8, 9, and/or a temperature control means in the apparatus, which may have glass-wool heat insulation. The top 4 may form a detachable guard. According to the Provisional Specification the heater 11 is gapped to provide an outlet.
