Abstract
891,285. Washing-machines. LOVELL MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 28, 1960 [Jan. 27, 1960], No. 44433/60. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XIII] In a combined clothes washing and drying machine comprising an imperforate drum having a front wall 38 with an opening through which a collar 51 extends, the collar 51 being fixed to the frame of the machine and defining a loading opening having a door 3, leakage of water is prevented by a gasket 57 carried by the door and engaging the collar 51, and by an annular stationary seal 48 co-operating with a sealing member 45 fixed to the wall 38 of the drum. The seal 45 (Fig. 5) is of felt and has grooves 46 receiving ribs 47 on the seal 48 which is supported by a collar 49 fixed to the machine frame. A further seal 53 is provided between flanges 52 and 49a on the collars 51 and 49 respectively. The drum has an inner front wall 34 with perforations 37 leading to an annular chamber 36 which can be drained by a tube 39 connected to a suction pump 60. A rear inner wall has a perforated section 32 through which heated air for drying is drawn by a fan 7. A waterdeflecting conical shield 29 protects the fan from water flowing through the perforated section 32. A part-circular projection 4 on the door 3 has a flat upper surface 5 defining a passageway through which water is introduced for washing and heated air for drying. The drum is filled through a water supply pipe 58a having a nozzle 58b. By means of an overrunning clutch 72, the fan 7 is stationary while the drum is rotated for washing and spin drying and is driven only when the drive motor 66 is reversed for final drying. The drum is supported at the front end by rollers 41.
