A hand iron having steaming means comprising a boiler 17, a steam dome 24 and a passageway 25 for conducting steam to ports 28 in the sole-plate, is also provided with means for spraying water on to the work, this means comprising a steam passageway 30 (Fig. 3) from the steam dome 24 to a duct 34, a passageway 31 for water connecting the boiler 17 to the duet 34, and valves 39, 49 for closing the passageways whereby opening of the valves enables steam pressure in the boiler to force water through the passageway 31 to issue from an orifice 36 as a stream of fine droplets of water. Valve stems 37, 46 are operated by a button 59 provided with a groove 64 whereby when the button 59 is depressed against spring action, the steam valve 39 is opened before the water valve 49. Steaming through the sole-plate during water spraying is prevented by engagement of valve 39 with the upper end of passageway 25. Means 72 is provided for limiting the steam flow through passageway 25 to maintain in the boiler a steam pressure sufficient to produce a water spray as soon as the valves 39, 49 are opened. Increased steam pressure in the boiler operates the means 72 in such a way as to permit increased flow of steam. The steam dome 29 incorporates a relief valve (Fig. 4, not shown). Filling of the boiler 17 is effected by releasing locking mechanism 19, 20 and pivoting the handle to the dotted line position. The filling opening 22 has a closure plug 21 and vents 85, 86 permitting rapid release of steam pressure. A cup 80 prevents sudden emission of steam and boiling water, the cup having bottom openings which are closed by steam pressure acting on a disc 83 loosely mounted on a pin 82.
