Abstract
890,255. Ball joints LANGEN, V. Sept. 11, 1959 [Sept. 27,1958], No. 31105/59. Class 65(2). Movement, of the ball within the socket is limited by the engagement of a projection on the ball, on its side' remote from the pin 4, with a resilient retaining member that is displaced against its own resilience as the projection approaches its position of maximum displacement corresponding to each direction of tilting of the pin, resilient means such as a spring 10, being provided to urge the ball in the axial direction in which the pin extends from the ball. The projection may be in the form of a stop 5, Fig. 1, surrounded by a retaining ring 6 of resilient material, e.g. rubber or synthetic material, or a smaller ball 5<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, resting in a recess in the ball and engaged by a spring-loaded retaining plate 9. The radius of curvature of the plate 9 decreases towards its edge 13 so that as the pin 4 is tilted the plate is displaced by the smaller ball 5<SP>1</SP> until its edge bears against the joint cover 11.
