Abstract
889,751. Mass spectrometers. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Dec. 14, 1959 [Dee. 12, 1958], No. 42507/59. Class 39(1) The high-frequency mass spectrometer described in Specification 773,689 in which charged particles oscillate in stable and unstable paths in a time varying electric field of hyperbolic distribution as they travel between longitudinal, e.g. four cylindrical, electrodes which set up the required field, is adapted for use at relatively high gas pressures, e.g. up to 10<SP>-2</SP> mm. Hg., by providing a cold ion source 2 which operates in accordance with Penning's oscillating electron principle, and by making the ion drift space, i.e. the length of the electrodes 4, comparable in dimensions to the length of the mean free path of the ions at the operating pressure. In order to obtain sufficient mass resolution it is arranged that the ions enter the ion drift space at a velocity such that the number of possible oscillations of the ions in the field is at least 3.5 times the square root of the required resolving power. The apparatus may be used for carrying out gas analyses or for the observation of degasification, drying operations and gas leakage in vacuum apparatus.
