Abstract
Sodium chlorite trihydrate crystals are partially dehydrated by means of a hot gas, for example air, inert to the sodium chlorite, preferably in such a manner that the temperature remains below 38 DEG C. The sodium chlorite trihydrate crystals may be produced by cooling a, preferably saturated, sodium chlorite solution to below 38 DEG C., or by evaporating a sodium chlorite solution and crystallizing in one apparatus working at reduced pressures and below 38 DEG C., or by concentrating a solution at reduced pressure and below 38 DEG C., and passing the solution so obtained into a vessel containing a suspension of fine sodium chlorite trihydrate crystals maintained in the form of a fluid bed. The sodium chlorite solution may be prepared by reacting chlorine dioxide with an aqueous solution of sodium peroxide. The partially dehydrated sodium chlorite crystals obtained by the process of the invention are in the form of a core of sodium chlorite trihydrate surrounded by a layer of anhydrous sodium chlorite, and preferably contain 70-90% by weight of NaClO2.
