887,471. Gas-filled lighters. WALL Ltd., HOWARD. May 9, 1960 [Feb. 10, 1959], No. 4651/59. Class 75(3) A smoker's lighter comprises a gas valve 26 biased to open position by a spring 27 and means to close the valve when the finger-piece 1 for operating a cover 2 and a flint wheel 3 is released. When the finger piece 1 is depressed against the action of a spring 22 a pin 31 on the finger piece 1 moves out of engagement with one end of a lever 28 pivoted at 29 and having its other end abutting a collar 30 on the gas valve 26. The lever is thus free to pivot and to allow the valve 26 to open. In another embodiment the pivoted lever is replaced by a slide which slides on the top of the lighter and has a cam face engaging with the collar on the gas valve. The finger piece has a pin which engages in an inclined slot in the slide so that depression of the finger piece causes sliding movement of the slide to allow the gas valve to open. The gas may be led to the gas valve by a wick held at its end between absorbent paper discs and the pressure on the discs can be regulated by a screw to control the size of the flame.
