Abstract
885,936. Corn harvesters. AVCO CORPORATION. April 19, 1960, No. 13617/60. Class 6(3). A tractor-drawn corn harvester comprises sheet metal crop dividers 12, 14 and endless chains 16, 18 moving the corn stalks into the gap 50 between two, rearwardly inclined, rotating, ear-snapping rollers 20, 22. The roller 20 comprises two parts 20a and 20b jointed together at 40 and supported in adjustable bearings 78, 80, the relative positions of the two parts being adjusted so that the front part 20b diverges from the roller 22 to define the gap 50, and the rear part 20a extends parallel to and above the roller 22 to snap the ears from the corn stalks. The ears fall on to a conveyer 28 extending beside the rollers, the floor of the conveyer being formed with an extension 36 passing beneath the roller 22 to prevent crop wastage. The rear part of the roller 20 and the complete roller 22 are positively driven from the power take-off of the tractor drawing the harvester. The joint 40 between the two parts of the roller 20 may take the form of a universal joint, in which case the forward part 20b of the roller is also positively driven, but alternatively the joint may be of the ball and socket type, in which case the part 20b is merely driven by friction occurring at the joint. In this latter case, drive to the front part of the roller is interrupted in the event of ears of bent corn stalks entering the gap 50, thereby preventing premature severance of the ears from the stalks.
