[Also in Group XIII] An apparatus for emptying and flushing a vessel 13 containing pasty substances, e.g. cellulose digesters and diffusers, comprises a vertically movable and rotatable flushing pipe 14 provided with nozzles 15 and a conical valve closure member 16 which, when the pipe is fully lowered seals the vessel outlet 12. The pipe has a perforated portion 28 located in a flushing fluid pressure chamber 22, is reciprocated by a double-acting piston 24 operating in a cylinder 23, and is rotated by a motordriven worm gear 35 engaging splines 35s on the piston-rod 29. In a modification (Fig. 7 not shown), the apparatus is located beneath a vessel 44 provided with an elbow outlet 41 in which is located the pressure chamber 40.
