885,249. Treating tobacco. SASMOCO S.A. April 9, 1958 [April 12, 1957; Oct. 2, 1957], No. 11281/58. Class 130. Tobacco having a normal aroma but a reduced nicotine content and whose smoke contains at least 40% less anthracene and pyrene derivatives, 55% less 3,4-benzopyrene and 30% less tars than normally is formed by passing tobacco of 10 to 15% moisture content on conveyer screens 11 and at room temperature (18‹ to 25‹ C.) through carbon tetrachloride flowing between ducts 6, 7, the immersion period being not more than one hour and being followed by a carbon tetrachloride rinse from a nozzle 8, drying in an area 10 and roasting or stocking. Cut tobacco for cigarettes, whole tobacco leaves or finished cigars may be treated.
