Abstract
884,517. Sewing-machines. COBBLE BROS. MACHINERY CO. Ltd. May 28, 1959 [May 28, 1958], No. 16971/58. Class 112 To prevent damage to a tufted product when failure occurs of the means to cut tufts engaged by a looper below the fabric a mechanism is provided to stop the tufting machine and/or actuate an alarm. The mechanism comprises a set of feelers 14 one arm of which rests on the fabric, and contacts arranged to be operated by movement of any feeler due to the fabric on which it rests being pulled down from its normal position. The angle bar 1 which forms a presser foot is provided with brackets 6 recessed to accommodate an insulated packing 9 carrying a contact bar 10 extending the full-length of the multi-needle machine. A bar 8 secured to the underside of the brackets by thumbscrews 16 is provided with a number of transverse slots, one for each needle, each slot freely accommodating a feeler 14 pivoted on a common pivot bar 13 located in a longitudinal slot 12 running through the transverse slots. Clamping screws (not shown) in some of the webs between the transverse slots hold the bar 13 in place, while the thumbscrews 16 permit removal of the bar 8 to permit free access to the needles when necessary. Each feeler has a long finger 18 riding on the fabric and normally this holds the feeler with its short finger 17 away from the contact bar 10. If the fabric is pulled down by loops remaining uncut and not released from the looper the finger 18 falls and the finger 17 moves to engage the bar 10 and complete the circuit. In a modification the feelers are not disposed in slots in the bar 8 but are spaced from each other by washers on the bar 13. In a further modification the fingers normally maintain a circuit and interrupt it when the fabric is pulled down.
