The invention comprises the compound l-bromo-nonadecatetrayn-(4,7,10,13), and a process for the manufacture of compounds CH 3 (CH 2 ) 4 (C#C.CH 2 ) 4 (CH 2 ) 2 -X, where X is Cl or Br, which comprises reacting the compound where X is OH with PCl 3 or PBr 3 in an inert solvent in the presence of an acid binding agent. These compounds may be converted to the corresponding acid (X=COOH) by reaction with magnesium and carbonation, and the resulting acid may be partially hydrogenated at the triple bonds to produce arachidonic acid. The reaction with magnesium may be effected in diethyl ether in the presence of a C 1-7 alkyl halide. According to the Provisional Specification, X may also be iodine, the iodide being prepared by reacting the alcohol with phosphorus and iodine. Specifications 859,898 and 883,481 are referred to.
