Abstract

882,209. Knitting-machines. SINGERFIDELITY Inc. April 22, 1958 [April 29, 1957 ; Dec. 30, 1957], No. 12710/58. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group IX] The tension in a linearly moving yarn 15 is maintained at a steady value by a device comprising an arm 8, pivoted at 7 to a stationary support 6. The arm 8 and support 6 carry rods 9 and 11, and 14 respectively, and the yarn 15 passes between them as shown, friction between yarn and rods providing the tension. The tension of the yarn is determined by the position of a counterweight 12, adjustable on arm 8, movement of which is damped by a dashpot connected at 22. An increase in tension of the yarn causes the rods 9, 14 to move further apart, thus decreasing the area of contact of yarn and rods and therefore the friction, which lessens the tension. A decrease in tension causes the rods 9, 14 to intermesh further, thus increasing the tension. In this way tension variations within a small range are automatically compensated. Larger variations in tension are compensated for by a sphere 35 which rolls along concave tracks 34 in the counterweight 12.
