880,875. Gripping devices for handling articles; manifold arrangements. REMY & CIE, E. P. Feb. 6, 1958 [Feb. 7, 1957; Dec. 3, 1957], No. 3929/58. Class 78 (4). A device for gripping bottles or like containers having a neck with a constricted portion therearound comprises a hollow head, in which is mounted a resilient washer which fits over the neck of the bottle or like container, the head being provided with a movable mechanical member which is adapted to compress the washer, whereby the washer is caused to grip the neck of the container. As shown in Fig. 1, a resilient washer 17 rests on a lip 19 of the head 16, and is depressed to grip the bottle neck 18 by a disc 20 moved by means of a control rod 21. A catch 24 may be provided to engage in a slot 28 in the rod 21 to maintain the washer in a gripping position. As shown, Fig. 7, a number of these devices may be combined to form a multiple gripping unit. In a modification, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the washer is formed as a pair of hollow frustoconical portions, one resting on the lip 19 and the other being secured to the disc 20. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the washer consists of a single hollow frusto-conical portion.
